Head teacher in HALIFAX

LAURA PHINNEY

With a solid background in sports, training handstands, and a love for Yoga, Laura found acro yoga in 2018.

Her passion ignited for it when she took her first workshop at Movi Movement and got the bug for it instantly. Having played sports year-round growing up, Acro yoga really lit up something in her that she didn’t always see in traditional team sports– everybody wins.

There is no “us vs them” in acro yoga, you are always cheering everyone on in big and small moves.

She began co-leading classes in 2018 and sharing the practice with anyone willing in her
nomadic days in her early 20s. She travelled to Acro festivals, found communities wherever she travelled, and now settling in Halifax Nova Scotia in 2023 where she has been facilitating the growth of the Halifax Acro community by sharing classes and jams.

Her love for Thai massage coincided with her passion for acro yoga, beyond the skills of more solar/dynamic acro yoga flows, she loves the lunar practice of acro therapeutics and Thai massage. Thai massage is a great and relaxing way to reciprocate therapeutic massage to bases.

There is a paradox in the practice of acro yoga – for such a beautiful outward display of moves, more of the growth happens internally when we practice Acro Yoga. How do we speak to ourselves when we try the same move again and again with no result? How do we communicate with others when something does not go as planned?
